Addleshaw Goddard
We are working together with this major legal services firm to design and run development centres across their three sites as a key element of their talent management strategy. As well as nurturing the talent of their experienced lawyers, the centres provide an indication of individuals’ potential and support them in planning their career progression. We have been especially commended about the authenticity and relevance of the development centre exercises we designed. Following a successful pilot in the autumn of 2007, we are scheduled to roll-out a further seven centres throughout 2008.

Citizens Advice
We have been working with Citizens Advice since 2004 and were asked to provide a programme to support managers and pivotal individuals in the organisation in managing change and in helping their colleagues deal with change. We produced a two-day Supporting Change Management workshop, designed to meet the needs of any staff member below Board level (a separate version of the workshop was designed for the Board, to include the specific issues related to leading change). The workshop began with delegates reflecting on their personal experience of change and using this to develop an understanding of the process of change and the emotions that accompany it. This reflection and learning is then applied to practical change tools, such as supporting colleagues in moving through the change curve; identifying barriers to change and risks in change programmes; managing stakeholders in change; developing a positive approach to change using Appreciative Inquiry; and producing plans for change projects in their own workplaces.

Communities and Local Government
In line with the department’s aim of developing a coaching culture and encouraging development, the Learning and Development team at CLG wanted to promote Mentoring and develop a more consistent approach across the organisation. We worked with the L&D team to review the proposed structure of the mentoring system. As part of this process we consulted current mentors and mentees about their experiences and discussed with senior managers, including the Board Champion for Coaching, what they would like to see result from an increased amount of mentoring taking place. Drawing on these discussions and our experience of working with mentors and mentoring schemes, we designed and are currently running a one-day workshop for current and future mentors.

Highways Agency
In recent years the Highways Agency has raised its profile and engaged directly with the public at very diverse events from the obvious Motor Show and Truckfest, through to Gardeners’ World and The Clothes Show. It recognised that staff would benefit from training in representational skills and that the introduction of a training programme would also achieve a consistency of approach across the country. We drew on our knowledge of the Agency and its activities (we have been working with the Highways Agency since the lead up to its creation in 1994), and the specialist communications expertise provided by one of our associates, Lin Johnston, to create a practical and lively one-day workshop, Representing the Agency.
By the end of the day, delegates are equipped to achieve the Agency’s aim of positive engagement with its customers, through both transmitting its key messages and also listening to the needs and concerns of road users. In sum, as the Agency set out in its course specification, we enable delegates “to put a face to a faceless organisation”.

Recently Completed Projects
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Communities and Local Government
We recently delivered a Consultancy Skills Masterclass for the newly-appointed HR Business Partners for the Department for Communities and Local Government. Catering for a wide range of needs and experience, the bespoke workshops were fast-paced, with debate and practical exercises, and covered a range of topics, skills and tools that are now being applied. We included a mix of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ topics including diagnosing issues; scoping projects; managing risk; stakeholder and customer relationship management; and customer experience management, including looking at the influencing skills needed to work effectively with customers. The workshops also enabled the more experienced members of the group to share their experience and knowledge.

Department of Culture Media and Sport
We were asked by DCMS to review the arrangements used to award performance related bonuses to staff and recommend improvements for the future to achieve greater transparency, consistency and fairness in these arrangements in future. Through a survey of staff and discussions with senior managers and HR, we identified a number of practical steps to ensure these arrangements were more effective in future.

Government Offices
During 2007, we conducted skills audits for 7 of the 9 Government Offices in England. These web based audits enabled all staff to assess themselves against a framework of skills, knowledge and expertise, which we developed to reflect the demands of government office work over the next three to five years. Their role is changing to become strategic partners in localities and to better represent and reflect back on the impact of government policy in the regions. The audit enabled each Office to develop a learning and development strategy to equip staff for this future role and capture the expertise already available.

Office of Rail Regulation
We worked in partnership with PTS Consortium (the in-house training arm of BERR) to develop core and specialist competence frameworks for the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR). Working to a tight project timescale, to ensure the new frameworks were in place to support the launch of a new performance management system, we carried out interviews and workshops with groups of ORR staff around the UK. This enabled us to develop the core competence framework and to identify the number and nature of the specialist roles in ORR.
We then produced new guidance for the ORR performance management system, covering not only the use of the new competences, but also all aspects of the new performance management system, and designed and ran workshops on the operation of the process for all staff in the organisation.
